‘Permafrost’ is a piece I designed in terms of a Radical Publishing college project. The goal was to create a publication on a crucial issue that would deeply resonate with me. It was also important to use any out-of-the-ordinary artistic means to radically draw people’s attention. It turned out to be an excellent opportunity to learn more about myself, my people (the peoples of Siberia) and to spread awareness about a vital environmental problem, the thawing of permafrost. This issue has been affecting people’s lives in Siberia, Alaska and some regions of Canada for decades. To make the publication more personal, I focused specifically on my homeland. I used the imagery and texts produced by the local photographers, journalists and activists. To make sure the publication leaves an impression, I cut pieces out of the booklet’s pages and replaced them with tracing paper. That way, pages would ‘thaw’ as the reader flips through them, to the point where there would not be any paper left.
